Bathroom Lighting Tips & Tricks

bathroom lighting

Of all the rooms in your home that need good lighting, the bathroom is one of the most critical. After all, it’s one of the first places you go after you wake up, or perhaps visit in the middle of the night. It’s where you may apply makeup, shave, or floss: all activities where you need to be able to see what you’re doing! In fact, some of the most common household injuries involve falls in the bathroom, where floors can be slippery. Good lighting is more than just convenient, it’s a necessity.

But not all lighting is created equal. Some lights are poorer in quality than others: too harsh, not bright enough, and hard on the eyes. For aesthetic as well as safety reasons, bathroom lighting is important. Learn from the experts at Art Plumbing, Air Conditioning & Electric why light matters, and how you can achieve quality lighting in your bathroom.

Bathroom Light Levels

Just how much bathroom light is needed? There’s no right answer here; it all depends on the person and their individual needs. Here are different types of bathroom lighting for you to consider:

Daylighting

Of all the lighting options out there, nothing beats daylight: the natural, can’t-be-replicated kind. Natural lighting is best for regulating your circadian rhythm and sleep cycle; there’s a great deal of science supporting this fact. So, having natural bathroom lighting is one important option when it comes to designing or remodeling a bathroom. This can be achieved with skylights or windows; perhaps more than one, depending on what your floor plans allow. To protect your privacy, bathroom windows can be decorated with blinds, curtains, bottom-up shades, or window decals – the decision is up to you, and your personal taste.

Because sunlight doesn’t stay in the same place all day, a 2×3-foot skylight is optimum for achieving up to 200fc of light – even if it’s cloudy or overcast.

Bath Lighting

A chandelier or some other decorative fixture can create a luxurious vibe for homeowners. For safety reasons, you’ll want to choose a fixture that is at least three feet from your bathtub, and must be no less than seven feet above water. Adding a dimmer can also add a nice touch, depending on the time of day, though 20% is the recommended amount to dim.

Indirect “up-lighting” is also a great source of extra ambiance. Simply add LED light strips or fluorescent lights under your bathroom cabinets. This provides a softer, illuminated effect.

Vanity Light

Quality vanity lighting is important for getting dressed or otherwise fixing up your style. It’s recommended to mount light fixtures on either side of your bathroom mirror, around eye level. This will ensure that there are no shadows on your face when you use your mirror for, say, applying makeup or shaving. If you don’t have a wall mirror, another option for vanity lighting is to attach your light fixtures to side walls or utilize ceiling pendants.
