Electrical Repair: Fixing A ‘Dead’ Outlet

Electrical Repair

A dead outlet can be a frustrating problem to have. Knowing what causes them is a sure way to getting it back to working order. Here’s a look at how you can get your electrical repair job fixed in no time.

Causes of Dead Outlets

Understanding the root of the problem is the key to getting your electrical outlet fixed. There are a few main causes that you should get checked out.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

When a single outlet is drawing too much power, it can lead to a circuit breaker trip. This is an overloading safety mechanism to prevent an electrical fire from breaking out.

Sometimes it might be as simple as checking if you have a tripped breaker. Turning the breaker back on will often solve the problem. Yet sometimes this may not be the case. The tripped breaker may be pointing towards an underlying wiring issue. Wires can loosen over time, causing a break in the electrical connection.

When it comes to circuit board repairs, make sure that you call on the services of an experienced electrician.

Tripped GFCI Outlet

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are usually installed in high-risk areas. These mostly being bathrooms and kitchens.

These outlets contain test and reset buttons. If an electrical current leak is picked up by these outlets, they will immediately trip and shut off our power. If you suspect a problem, your GFCI outlets will need to be inspected to rule out any further issues.

GFCI outlets can also give you warning signs of other potential electrical repair issues in your home. A tripping reset button often points towards an unstable current. Be sure to contact a licensed electrician to test and troubleshoot your GFCI outlets.

Bad Wiring

Over time, wiring can age and deteriorate. Wires may loosen or split altogether which will cause a break in electrical current. That can result in a dead outlet. Loose wiring can be dangerous as it can heat up uncontrollably and cause a fire. If you’re living or working in an older home or office space, it’s best to get in a qualified electrician. They will conduct a comprehensive wiring test to ensure your safety.

When To Get Your Outlets Checked Out

If any of your outlets stop working, it’s best to get these electrical repair issues checked as soon as possible. If you notice any of the following warning signs, you know it’s time to get things checked out:

  • Sparking outlet
  • A constantly warm outlet
  • Signs of blackening around the outlet
  • Intermittently functioning outlet
  • Completely dead outlet

Continuing to use a partially faulty outlet could be a ticking time bomb until a further problem arises. Dead outlets can also be a safety hazard for your family. Outlets are replaceable but require experience and skill to correctly wire all of the connections. If you have a dead outlet, it’s best to leave it alone and call in a professional to diagnose and fix the issue.
