What exactly are the advantages of a vehicle charging station? Art is here to break down the investment—and the science!
With the rapidly evolving electric car movement, it’s becoming almost inevitable that many more vehicle owners will embrace the trend. When weighing up the pros and cons of installing a vehicle charging station, consider your current business position.
If you already run an enterprise that includes supplying electrical needs, this could give you an additional merchandising advantage.
If you are a property developer, this would be an excellent way to improve your green footprint. Your development may be aimed at an overall lifestyle experience, including shopping, eating and health. Having the convenience of an on-site charging station would only enhance your income potential, especially if your clientele includes millennials or Generation Z.
Or think vehicle fleets: car rental companies, hotel groups, funeral homes, airports — any industry that caters to large numbers of cars would be eager for a local outlet that they could sell as an advantage to their client base.
Anyone with even a vague sense of environmental responsibility has heard of greenhouse gases, or GHGs.
But what does that actually mean?
As well as water vapor, GHGs are generally described as comprising three natural gases:
Also on the list are synthetic fluorinated gases, usually produced as emissions by large industries.
Although GHGs allow radiation to enter the earth’s atmosphere, they stop it from being extracted again. This results in the surface of the earth becoming more heated as it cannot cool down efficiently — hence the term ‘greenhouse’. GHGs occur in different concentrations, but the cumulative effect is potentially lethal for our continued existence.
Vehicle charging stations do not generate any noxious emissions: they work by charging your car battery through an electrical outlet. That electricity supply can be supplied from environmentally friendly sources such as wind or solar power, paving the way to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels like coal, gas and oil. An electric vehicle will not add to degradation of the environment, as it has no capacity to give off GHGs.
There are differences between installing a vehicle charging station as a commercial enterprise, or one for home use.
If you are considering a home outlet, bear in mind that there are 3 levels of EV (electric vehicle) charging stations: 1, 2, and 3, aka DC Fast Chargers.
Each has different installation requirements: i.e., level 1 means the charger can be plugged into a wall outlet, but level 2 cannot. Level 3 is for commercial or industrial use.
You will have to study the technical data specifications to decide which one is right for you.
Remember to consider aspects such as:
Not all EVs come with the same charging capacity, so do your own homework before you buy.
The field of EVs is too new to state categorically whether they are beneficial in the long term. In light of our knowledge of gaseous toxins and the damage they are causing to our health, it can probably be safe to say that EVs will be a large part of our future, if not yet in our present.
So, that begs the question: is installing a vehicle charging station worth the investment?
The answer is likely affirmative, as we look towards rehabilitating our planet and repairing some of the damage caused by decades of insensitive technological applications.
