When Do I Need an Electrical Safety Inspection

electrical safety inspections

Every 3 years the National Electrical Code (NEC) is updated and new electrical safety standards are put in place. Manufacturers of electrical appliances or components need to adhere to the strict protocols outlined by the NEC, and while the NEC is not part of federal regulatory requirements; many states use the NEC as a guideline to ensure that safe electrical practices are adhered to. Each state has different regulations regarding the installation of electrical wiring or appliances in homes. It is important to remember to hire a state licensed electrician for all your electrical service needs. Due to the constant changes in local and state regulation regarding electrical safety standards and practices, it is important that your home undergoes electrical safety inspections at least once a year. This will ensure that everything electrical in your home is not only up to code, but that your home is not at risk of any electrical faults that could cause damage to your property or even serious injury to a loved one.

Electrical appliances are a lot more reliable and less prone to faults as it may have been in the past, but it doesn’t mean that your appliance is 100% safe. While some appliances just stop working at the end of its lifespan, others may cause damage due to a fault with the wiring or within the appliance itself. Sometimes there are faults with household electrical appliances due to human error and not the product itself, for example, you may accidentally spill soda on an electrical appliance. Your appliances can easily be fixed if the fault is spotted soon enough, but unfortunately you can’t see through your walls to the electrical wiring that runs throughout your home. Yearly electrical safety inspections will ensure that there is no wear and tear on your wiring, which could be hazardous.

When Do I Need an Electrical Safety Inspection?

  • Buying A New Home

While ‘try before you buy’ is applicable to clothing stores, inspect before you regret should be applicable to purchasing a new home. Hire a licensed electrician to ensure that the home’s wiring is up to code. This will ensure that you won’t be given any nasty surprises after your purchase of the home.

  • Before You Upgrade

Everyone loves the look and functionality of shiny new appliances, but you need to ensure that your new appliance won’t have a negative impact on your homes electrical system. If your electrical panel can’t handle the new appliance, you may find yourself constantly dealing with blown fuses or tripped breakers.

  • Older Homes Need More TLC

Older homes have a charm about them, but they can come with plenty of problems if they aren’t regularly maintained. Have a licensed electrician take a look at your homes wiring to ensure that everything is still safe; your electrician will inform you if you need to make electrical repairs to prevent electrical damage from occurring.

  • After A Storm

You need to have your electrical system checked after a heavy storm or natural disaster, such as a hurricane. Your household electrical panel may have been compromised and it is important that you get your wiring checked as soon as possible, especially if flooding has occurred.
